"In its absence, the Old Bridge quickly became a powerful symbol of Bosnian multiculturalism because its destruction was understood as an attack on Bosnia’s pluralistic tradition. The new Old Bridge, which was rebuilt in 2004, has also become a symbol of peace and reconciliation because its reconstruction is compared to the rebuilding of metaphoric bridge between Bosnia’s divided peoples." - Emily Makas, Cornell University. The bridge was placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2005.
